Barnes & Noble returns fire, new Nook HD and HD+ tablets

Barnes & Noble roll out light weight tablets, with Android ICS
Barnes & Noble has launched the latest salvo in it ongoing e-reader and tablet war with Amazon by releasing its new Nook HD+ and Nook HD tablets. The Nook HD+ is aimed at tackling the 8.9-inch Kindle Fire HD with a 9-inch display. The new Nook HD shares the same 7-inch screen dimensions as Amazon’s 7-inch Kindle Fire HD. Both sets of devices from the two companies also share the same dual-core Texas Instruments OMAP 4470 processor.
Barnes & Noble claim that the Nook HD+ is the lightest 9-inch tablet on the market, weighing in at 515 grams. Its 9-inch 1080p display features a slightly higher resolution display than its Kindle HD opposition, sporting a 1920x1280 resolution at 256 pixels per inch. Its TI processor is clocked at 1.5GHz, while it comes in 16GB and 32GB variants, both with microSD card support. Battery life is rated at 10 hours for reading and 9 hours for video.
Barnes & Noble also claim that its 7-inch Nook HD is also lighter than both the Google Nexus 7 and the 7-inch Kindle Fire HD, weighing in at 315 grams. Its 7-inch 720p display also sports at high-resolution 1440x900 pixel resolution, which is rated at 243 pixels per inch. The Nook HD comes in 8GB or 16GB variants with both models also support microSD cards up to 32GB. Battery life is rated at 10.5 hours for reading and 9 hours for video, while the TI OMAP processor is clocked at 1.3GHz.
Both the Nook HD and the HD+ run a forked version of Android 4.0 ‘Ice Cream Sandwich.’ As with the Amazon Kindly Fire HD range, this means that it does not supprt Google Play and only offers apps and other media through a curated Barnes & Noble service portal.
The Barnes & Noble 9-inch Nook HD+ comes in only a slate color, with the 16GB version retailing ofor $269 and a 32GB model costing $299. The 7-inch Nook HD comes in two choices of colors with options for Snow or Smoke. Either come in 8GB ($199) or 16GB ($229) variants. All models are currently available for pre-order ahead of their November 1 debut.
