American Express launches iOS Passbook implementation

App tracks balance, transaction history, spending history

As expected, American Express has launched its Pass service for the Apple iOS 6 Passbook application. The Pass allows card members to get access to the running balance, display recent activity, show spending updates, and contact customer service directly from the application.

To use the Amex Pass, users need to visit the site, provide some personal information including card number and CID to register and log in to the service. Valid American Express consumer or OPEN business cards can be used with the application.

This seems to be a poorly prepared article. First of all, Amex PASS is their program for allowing parents to provide their kids with a fixed-fund debit card, targeted towards college students and those away from home on trips. So based on this article, the Passbook feature only applies to a particular AmEx card holder. Second, this can only be assumed because nothing on AmEx's PASS site or their main site even mentions Passbook much less a way to sign up. Electronista has provided no links and a very minimal description of how to get started with this service. At best, this article's source seems to be a watercooler conversation!

I'm wondering if this was meant to be American Airlines since their "As expected" link links to an article that mentions American Airlines, but never mentions American Express. There is no recently updated American Express app, but American Airlines lists the update as September 20, 2012.
