Starbucks updates iOS app for iOS 6, Passbook support

updated 10:10 pm EDT, Wed October 3, 2012

Passbook version has iPhone 5 4-inch Retina support

After been seen demonstrated by Apple as an example of how Passbook works back in June, Starbucks updated its iOS app for iOS 6 support and the ability to store and use a Starbucks loyalty card on Passbook, Apple's "virtual wallet" application that is built into iOS 6. The update allows users to store their virtual card information in both the app itself and Passbook, the latter of which can prove more convenient for presentation as it can be accessed automatically as the user enters the venue, even over the lock screen.

Originally promised for the end of September, the new version also addresses multiple bugs, implements accessibility, data optimization and performance improvements, and revamps the account creation to make it easier to sign up and earn reward points. Users will still need to use the actual app in order to refill their virtual card balance, but can simply show the card using passbook to check remaining balance and display the barcode of the card for scanning at any of the chain's outlets.

Currently, Passbook is only available for iPhones running iOS 6, and automatically adjusts the display to take advantage of the iPhone 5's 4-inch Retina display if available. The Starbucks app is compatible with all iOS devices capable of running iOS 5 or later.
