Txtr Beagle promises to be the world's smallest, simplest e-reader

German e-book developer Txtr has just shown off what promises to be the most affordable and smallest e-book reader on the market. Called Beagle, it sports a 5-inch, 800x600 E-ink screen and is under a fifth of an inch (under 5mm) thick. The device otherwise keeps features to a minimum, which helps keep the weight down to just 4.5oz (128 grams).

There are no ports for cables, as the device is powered entirely by three AAA batteries, said to be capable of lasting for up to one year. It transfers content onto it over Bluetooth, though it can only thus far communicate with Android-powered devices thanks to a dedicated app (free, Google Play).

There is 4GB of built-in storage, but no memory card slot. In Europe, the reader may cost as little as 10 euros (about $13), though this may include some kind of subsidy (no 3G radio is included, so the type of subsidy is unknown). Pricing elsewhere isn't known, nor are release dates, but the device should arrive in Asian, European, and US markets. [via TheDigitalReader]
