GoPro unveils the Hero3, a tiny, 4K-capable sports camera

GoPro has taken the wraps of its Wi-Fi-enabled Hero3sports camera. As the promotional video embedded highlights, depending on model, the new wearable device supports video resolutions up to 4K, or 4 times the resolution of 1080p. The Hero3 is also 30 percent smaller and 25 percent lighter than the model it replaces.

The Hero3 is available in three models. At the high end, the Black Edition retails for $400, but is the only model that can shoot in 4K. While it is capable of the higher resolution, frame rates are dropped to 15fps to make it possible. However, it can shoot 1080p at a high 60fps and 720p at 120fps. The Black Edition can also take still images at 12-megapixels, with a 30fps burst capability. A Wi-Fi remote is also included.

The Silver Edition ($300) can shoot in 1080p at 30fps and 720p at 60fps. It can take 11-megapixel stills and shoot in bursts at 10fps. Like the Black Edition, Wi-Fi is built-in, but the Wi-Fi remote is available at an additional $70. The White Edition ($200) can shoot video in 1080 at 30fps, while it can also shoot in 720p at 60fps. Stills are limited to 5-megapixels with a burst mode of just 3fps.

Each model ships with a range of accessories to either help make the Hero3 water proof, or attach it to a person or other locations on sports equipment, for example. Pre-orders for the GoPro Hero3 start at 12:01AM PT (3:01AM ET). [via Engadget]
