Wearable tech suitable for engineers, uses hands-free gestures
Motorola Solutions has revealed its new headset-based mobile computer. Appearing at first glance to be a version of Google's Project Glass for engineers, the HC1 Headset Computer uses voice recognition, head gestures and video streaming to navigate applications, and allows the wearer to see various schematics and documents relevant to the task at hand.
Using Kopin Corporation's optical micro-display technology, the HC1 offers the wearer a display the equivalent of a 800x600 resolution 15-inch screen , but for the left eye. Powered by a dual-core 800MHz TI processor with 3D graphic accelerator and using 512MB of RAM, its voice recognition engine can support six different languages with 99-percent accuracy, using the built-in dual micrphone with active ambient noise cancellation. As well as the voice recognition, the 9-axis gesture control and tracking, two extra user-programmable buttons are also included for unanticipated tasks that the system cannot easily cope with. The camera on the right-hand side can be used to stream 1080p video at 30 frames per second, or alternately could be used to take 2-megapixel stills. Built-in Wi-Fi and BlueTooth 2.1 offers network access, either directly or via a paired smartphone.
The HC1 will be available from Motorola Solutions for around $4,000 to $5,000, though when questioned by Slashgear, it was suggested the price could be discounted for volume purchases.
