Documents intended to facilitate case and accessory manufacture
Intended as a tool for designers to make iOS device cases, Apple has released detailed exterior schematics of the iPad Mini and new fourth-generation iPad on the developer section of its website. Not only are the device cases examined in detail, other assets like a flash test target are available for budding iOS device case designers.
In addition to the illustrations, Apple poses assorted guidelines to the case creators -- such as the case not being able to "impair or degrade the user's experience making and receiving" calls on the device. Other general acoustic considerations are included, like guidance against channeling speaker noise to the vicinity of the microphone to prevent cellphone call "echo."
The iPhone 5 documents previously seen are a bit more detailed than the iPad Mini set revealed today. Details such as the acquisition cones for the camera, and apertures for the flash are set forth, as well as specifics on where not to obscure with metal so as to allow for unimpeded antenna reception. No information is disclosed on any of the illustrations that a competitor would find useful that couldn't be discovered by other means.
