Cellular model still waiting in wings
Apple has run out of launch-day shipments for the iPad mini, a check of Apple's online store shows. While white Wi-Fi models went out of stock on Friday, some black models were still available over the weekend. As with the white units, black ones are now listed as shipping in two weeks, well past the November 2nd launch date.
Still unclear is how preorders of cellular-equipped Minis may be doing. Those models are only slated to ship in "Mid November," which gives Apple a flexible schedule. At the least, however, demand may be low enough to avoid pushing shipments into late November or early December.
Both black and white Minis should be available on November 2nd through Apple Stores and various third-party retailers. How retail demand will play out remains to be seen, since the Mini isn't the most powerful iPad, and Apple faces stiff competition from Amazon's Kindle Fire HD, which is both cheaper and technically superior, at least in some respects. Whereas the Kindle Fire starts at $199, Apple is charging a minimum of $329 for a Mini.
