Google retools Gmail interface to improve email drafting

updated 01:44 pm EDT, Tue October 30, 2012

New message composition pops up window in page

The Gmail team is now testing out an improvement to the user interface for the popular web email service, one that alters the message compose and reply interface in order to make it easier to reference additional content when writing an email. Beginning today, some users of Google's email service will be able to see their new and reply messages popping up in an in-window box similar to what appears for Google Talk chats. The hovering new email box will allow users to continue to refer back to other emails or navigate through their inboxes as they compose a new message.

The new hovering composition windows allows users to keep an eye on new mail as it arrives or to search through their inbox without navigating to a new screen. Like chats in Google Talk, emails can be minimized in order to be completed later.

Today's Gmail update also allows users to view the profile pictures of their contacts when they are suggested for autocomplete, allowing users to more readily choose the right recipient. The update will be rolling out as a preview today, but users looking to check out the new feature can find more information on how to enable it at the Gmail Help site.

What they should be upgrading is their corporate culture. It has likely tanked so much that it would take superhuman effort to fish it from the figurative toilet. That actually brings an old SuperNews! episode to mind; however, no puns were intended. All concerned citizens and upstanding public servants should see the content at the below url:

Those who view that content and follow the directions--and are not yet jaded beyond the point of no return--will likely be appalled and p.o.’d to the nth degree.
