Sony reveals new CineAlta 4K Super 35mm video cameras

updated 05:11 am EDT, Tue October 30, 2012

PL-mount lens range additions announced at same time

Sony has launched two broadcast-quality CineAlta PL-mount video cameras to go alongside the F65. The PMW-F55 and the PMW-F5 both contain 4K Super 35mm image sensors capable of an 11.6 million pixel, 4096x2160 resolution image. While the PMW-F5 can output HD and 2K video, the PMW-F55 extends this to 4K resolution imagery.

Both offer multi-codec support including Sony's new XAVC MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 format, the SR codec, and the industry-standard High Definition XSCAM 50Mbps 4:2:2 codec. In-camera recording uses Sony's new media, the SxS PRO+, allowing for XAVC recording in HD at a high frame rate, as well as 4K at 60fps in the PMW-F55. The F55 also features a global shutter to eliminate rolling shutter skew and flash band, and offers a wider color gamut.

At the same time as the high-end cameras, Sony is also launching its second generation of PL mount prime lenses, certified for 4K capture. Using a 9-blade iris for improved bokeh shots, the new lens series includes focal lengths of 20, 25, 35, 50, 85, and 135mm. All of the lenses have the same T2.0 aperture, the same external diameter, and gear locations, and barring the 135mm lens, all share the same height.

The PMW-F55 and PMW-F5 are set to be shipped in February 2013, though prices are currently unavailable.
