Apple nearing first beta of OS X 10.8.3

updated 03:41 pm EDT, Wed October 31, 2012

Developers get invites in advance of seed

Apple is on the verge of seeding the first beta of OS X 10.8.3, says AppleInsider. The site quotes developers who say they've received invitations to test the new software. Because Apple hasn't even begun distributing the beta yet, it's unknown what kind of changes the company might have in mind beyond fixing bugs and security vulnerabilities.

OS X 10.8.2 was released in September and made fairly substantial changes to Mountain Lion, for instance delivering promised Facebook integration. Beyond that, though, Apple may not introduce many new features in upcoming v10.8.x releases. The company has switched to an annual release cycle for OS X, and so significant features are likely to be reserved for paid upgrades.
