Korea demands iOS Maps change; emoji apps out of App Store

Fight over island chain extends into iOS 6

The South Korean government is demanding that Apple change the name of a chain of islets in iOS 6 Maps, the Korea Times reports. The chain is known as Dokdo in Korean, but Apple also lists the English (Liancourt Rocks) and Japanese (Takeshima) names for the land, reflecting the fact that both Korea and Japan dispute the land's ownership. "We protested to Apple’s Korean unit that, because Dokdo is clearly an integral part of our territory, the new reference is unacceptable and it should be marked as the Korean name of Dokdo wherever it is searched for," a Korean foreign ministry official comments. Previously Apple relied on data from Google, which uses just the Korean and English names, but is still believed to be unacceptable to the Korean government.

"Although Apple is a private organization, this is an issue that our government cannot concede on. So, we will continue reiterating our stance and requesting Apple to accept our demand," the official continues.

At the App Store, meanwhile, Apple is purging third-party apps using emoji characters. Apple is sending out notices to developers, insisting that because emoji support is now expanded and worldwide in iOS 6, their apps serve a duplicate function and violate App Store rules. In spite of this, at least some of the targeted emoji apps are still on sale; Apple is also said to be casting an unnecessarily wide net, sending notices for any app listing emoji as a feature, even if it's not the app's main purpose.

    Dear Korea,

Please do not let Samsung copy any more of our designs. In exchange, we will call your islands whatever you want us to.

    Sincerely,
    Apple

Eh, what? Maybe you should stop demanding, and just request. Flies and honey?

Apple should change it to Liancourt Rocks/Takeshima (not Korean territory).
