Samsung Galaxy S III sells 18 million units during Q3
The Samsung Galaxy S III took the number one position as the top selling smartphone in Q3, according to new research conducted by Strategy Analytics. The company estimated that Samsung sold 18 million Galaxy S III’s during the quarter. The Apple iPhone 4S came in second, with 16.2 million sales, despite strong rumors about the iPhone 5 putting a significant dent in iPhone sales for the quarter.
Samsung reported a record profit for its 3rd quarter on the back of its hot-selling Galaxy S III. The Korean whitegoods maker posted a record $7.4 billion, doubling its quarterly profit for the same period last year. The majority of its profit was made through sales of 58 million handsets, a combined figure representing the Galaxy S III sales as well as sales mid-range smartphone and its low-end feature phones.
Strategy Analytics predicts that Apple will comfortably regain the top spot for Q4, following the release of the iPhone 5 in the last two weeks of Q3. The combined sales of the iPhone 4S and the iPhone 5 actually were enough to push Apple to 22.5 million sales of what were its two headlining handsets for the quarter. Sterne Agee analyst Shaw Wu predicts that Apples combined iPhone sales for Q4 will exceed 26 million, assuming supply issues don’t affect iPhone 5 sales.

Wait. Aren't Apple's numbers based on end-user sales while Samsung's are " shipped" which means many of those are sitting I stock at carriers and stores? If so, and I believe this is true, then I would wager Apple,still delivered more handsets to users. And that is the only number that counts.
