API calls, Windows 8 integration features will not work

Microsoft has explained the difference between the mobile and desktop versions of Internet Explorer 10. While the Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8 do share the same core programming, there are some browser-based functions that the mobile version cannot do as of yet, something that web developers will need to look out for.

The list of things the WP8 version does not support, according to the company's blog post, includes ActiveX and VBScript, Drag-and-Drop APIs, simultaneous multi-track HTML5 audio, and inline video. Some manipulation view APIs for touch panning and zooming will not work, nor will file access APIs, with the exception of blobs due to on-handset support. Windows 8 integration features such as Link Previews, pinned site icons and notifications for connecting sites to apps are also absent in the mobile browser.

Though the list of unsupported features is an issue for website creators, the list of browser improvements outweighs it. CSS3 support including using gradients and custom fonts through the Web Open Font Format and TypeKit, automatic multi-column layouts and a number of other HTML5-powered features have made their way into both editions of the browser.
