Tweetro developer claims app 'crippled' by Twitter API limit

Twitter limit of 100,000 users hits another third-party client

Developers of Windows 8 Twitter client Tweetro have attacked the token limit set by the microblog service. In an e-mail to customers, Atta Elayyan of Lazyworm Applications complained that Twitter's limit of 100,000 users per third-party app has "completely crippled" the software, despite being told by Twitter that it would not enforce Oauth token limits until March next year.

According to the e-mail, received by Windows Observer, the app has received an average of 3 to 4 thousand downloads per day, and has had over 200,000 downloads since Tweetro launched as a "Release Preview." As users cannot get past the Oauth screen, the company is now considering pulling the app from the Windows Store until a solution is reached. Lazyworm is also considering adding more to the app and releasing it as a paid application, since the 100,000 user limit forces the small company to "justify development via financial means," instead of enjoying the exposure a high userbase provides.

Tweetro is not the only casualty in Twitter's tighter restrictions. Tapbots pulled Tweetbot after the change, but has since relaunched the app in the App Store. At the time the alpha version was stopped, Tapbots reported issues when working with Twitter to try and work around the limitation, noting that they had been "unable to come up with a solution that was acceptable" to the microblog. The beta ended up only open to those that had signed up during the alpha, as the user count restriction was still in effect.

Twitter recently announced it will develop its own app for Windows 8, but has not revealed when it will be made available to download.
