Apple expands office space in Cupertino and Santa Clara

Leases could be stopgap until 'spaceship' campus is finished

Apple is again expanding its California office space, according to the Silicon Valley/San Jose Business Journal. The company has signed leases for two buildings: one is a 57,479-square-foot office in Santa Clara, while the other is a 11,552-square-foot location in Apple's hometown of Cupertino. The Cupertino space is being subleased from a company called Roamware.

Apple has been continually expanding the amount of office space it uses in California, for instance securing 315,000 square feet in Sunnyvale in January. The company may be buying time until the completion of its so-called "spaceship" campus in Cupertino, which will use 650,000 square feet in solar panels alone, and house over 12,000 workers.

Expanding in California? The executives at Apple must be crazy.

High home costs drove out national and international non-profits in the 1980s.

Excessive regulations has driven out manufacturing. Call that the 1990s.

Environmental restrictions on water use have destroyed some of the most successful farming on the planet. Call that the 2000s.

The state government is deep in the red. There are only three deep pocketed sources of income that the state can go after:

    1. The rich. Already happening. But they can flee to other states.

    2. Hollywood. But high costs are already driving production elsewhere. Dangerous to encourage that.

    3. High tech. All those employees and their homes make it hard to move the company.

My guess the state will go after #3 soon.
