Surface tops Windows 8, Nokia tops Windows Phone

Microsoft's Surface RT has assumed a commanding market share, at least with regard to the nascent Windows 8 market. This according to the largest ad network for Windows Phone and Windows 8 apps, AdDuplex, which found that the reportedly fast-selling Surface RT tablet accounts for 11 percent of the overall Windows 8 market, more than the next seven Windows 8 devices combined. At the same time, Nokia retains the top spot among manufacturers of handsets running all versions of Windows Phone.

The Surface RT, which Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer described as having gotten off to "modest" sales, is the single most popular device running either Windows 8 or Windows RT. AdDuplex pointed out, though, that Microsoft was not the top Windows 8 manufacturer, according to its figures. That title fell to HP, which was followed by Microsoft and the Dell. Acer, which has been gaining in the PC market, took the fourth spot among Windows 8/RT manufacturers.

AdDuplex found that the Windows Phone segment -- a small segment of the smartphone market -- is overwhelmingly dominated by Nokia handsets, with the top four units being Nokia models. The Lumia 710, running Windows Phone 7, is the most popular model showing up in AdDuplex's figures, and the Lumia 920 has gained the eighth spot since its debut late last week. Nokia phones account for about 68 percent of Windows Phones seen by AdDuplex, with HTC lagging far behind at 17 percent.

In the week since its debut, Windows Phone 8 has grabbed about four percent of the overall Windows Phone market, according to AdDuplex.
