Android dips out of first place

iOS has returned to control of the US smartphone market in terms of device sales, according to new data from Kantar Worldpanel Comtech. In a 12-week period ending October 28th, iPhone sales accounted for 48.1 percent of the market; that put iOS up 25 percent year-over-year. Android, by contrast, slipped from 63.3 percent a year ago to just 46.7 percent.

In spite of this Android remains the leader in most other countries. During the latest period the platform managed 54.2 percent in Britain, 73.9 percent in Germany, and 81.7 percent in Spain. Kantar credits iOS' resurgence in the US to the iPhone 5, and suggests that iOS will hold onto its new position for many months.

"The last time we saw iOS overtake Android in the US was when the iPhone 4S was released and Apple managed to retain its lead for three consecutive periods," says Dominic Sunnebo, a global consumer insight director for Kantar. "This time we predict that Apple will beat its previous high of 49.3% and achieve its highest ever share of the US smartphone market within the next two periods."

Perhaps a less-than-ideal turn of phrase, but it communicates the core idea: one brand is beating out sales of over 300+ Android models, and will likely do so for the remainder of the year at least.
