Analysys: Apple dominates growing Chinese tablet sector

updated 02:09 pm EST, Wed November 28, 2012

iPad grabs 71.4 percent of Chinese tablets

According to a new report from Analysys International, Chinese consumers purchased 2.6 million tablets in the third quarter of 2012, of which more than seven in ten were iPads. The firm's analysis shows Apple with a commanding lead in a Chinese tablet market that grew 62.5 percent year-over-year. Despite its considerable lead, Apple's share of the tablet market actually dropped slightly from the second quarter of this year.

The iPad's Chinese tablet market share dropped by one percentage point from the second quarter to 71.4 percent of the 2.6 million tablets sold in China. At a distant second, Chinese firm Lenovo held 10.5 percent of the tablet market. Another Chinese firm, Ereneben, edged past Samsung, with 3.6 percent compared to Samsung's 3.5 percent.

Reuters reports that the tablet market in China has grown significantly in recent years, as Chinese technology consumers look for cheaper devices in order to allow them to access the Internet.

Analysys' figures are close to recent findings from IDC, which saw iPad shipments jumping significantly following Apple's resolution of a trademark dispute over the iPad brand.
