MS makes good on promise to deliver Office 2013 RT free of charge
Microsoft has issued a 348MB update for its Surface with Windows RT. The update (KB2748583) takes Office for Home and Student 2013 RT Preview to the final release version. One of the key advantages of the Surface RT is that it ships with a version of Office preloaded on the device; the new update makes good on Microsoft’s promise to take users to the final release version at no cost.
The update includes the final versions of Microsoft Word 2013 RT, Excel 2013 RT, PowerPoint 2013 RT and OneNote 2013 RT. Microsoft’s release notes indicate that the update includes previously unreleased fixes made specifically for Office 2013. In addition, the update also brings with it improvements in stability, performance and security. Microsoft has also update the app icons as a finishing touch.
Electronista has had a brief hands-on with the update and can report that it is noticeably faster and more responsive. The Preview version was somewhat glitchy, but was functional. The final versions appear to be much more polished and reveals the full range of functions and features that will also appear in the final release of Office 2013 for Windows 8.
