BBC iPlayer update for iPhone 5

As of Friday, the BBC has finally updated its iPlayer for iOS (free) app to accommodate the larger display of the iPhone 5. The v2.0.2 app, which is for UK residents only, also now sports a "facelift" on the watching programs portion, and feedback options have been improved as well. The free app has a counterpart for non-UK viewers called Global iPlayer (free), which has been similarly updated for the latest iPhone and iPod Touch. Global iPlayer users can enjoy a limited selection of free shows, or subscribe to get all the content for a month ($9) or a year ($85).

iPhone 5 now listed as 'in stock' in US, some other countries

Apple has dropped the "2-4 business days" wait for a new iPhone 5 down in the US online store to immediate shipping, listing all models as being "in Stock," a sign that supply crunches on the iPhone are finally receding. Most other countries checked by MacNN show either "in Stock" (Canada, Mexico, Australia and New Zealand) or "1-3 business days" (the UK, France, Germany). The increased supplies comes in spite of Apple bringing the phone to an additional 50 countries this month. Unlocked models of the iPhone in the US, a recent addition, are still listed as shipping in 1-3 business days.

Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition now available for iPad

The long-awaited turn-based RPG Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition is now available for iPad. The game, which originally debuted in 1998, now includes both the original game and the expansion Tales of the Sword Coast built in. The iPad version sells for $10, half the expected price of the forthcoming Mac or current Windows re-release, but unlike either of those makes the three new playable characters into in-app purchases (at $3 each). A future update will support cross-platform play between all versions, including a future Android release.

The game offers reworked, higher-resolution graphics, new cinematics, the full catalog of classes and sub-races from Baldur's Gate II, and residual bugs from the original program have been fixed with the help of some of the original Bioware developers. A sequel, Baldur's Gate II, is expected in 2013 -- more than 12 years after its original debut.
