HP counters hype over US-made Macs

Even as much of the news media focuses on Apple's recent announcement that it would be moving production of some of its Mac lineup back to American shores, Hewlett-Packard s dismissing the news, noting that HP has been assembling PCs in the United States "since the beginning." In a recent blog post and some follow-up statements to the media, HP pointed out that its workstations and commercial desktop PCs are manufactured in Indianapolis, with the company's servers manufactured in Houston. Building in the US, HP says, allows the company to better serve its customers due to being closer, as opposed to "building them in China and shipping them by sea."

Speaking with CNet, HP dismissed labor arbitrage as a driving factor, saying that its US-built products are "a higher value product than we might do in Asia. A higher level of customers that need build-to-order and close proximity." HP says that it will assemble 2.9 million PCs in the United States this year, with its manufacturing facilities employing hundreds of people and producing billions of dollars' worth of products.

Likewise, a blog post on The HP Blog Hub reaffirms those numbers, touting again the flexibility HP says it gains from building its wares in the United States. The company also says that it's bringing some consumer PC assembly back to North America, though it did not specify whether such assembly will be performed in the United States.

    LOL
HP is such a great company, that even with the morons running it now, it manages to stay afloat. They should go back to its roots and focus in the what they do best and stop trying to play the PR game.
