Microsoft announces SkyDrive for Xbox 360 plus 40 more apps

SkyDrive for Xbox is set to go live to Xbox 360 users later this morning at 10am PST. The SkyDrive app is one of over 40 new apps that will be variously rolling out to users around the globe over the next week. The addition of SkyDrive to Xbox will further drive Microsoft’s drive to push the Xbox 360 to the center of a user’s home entertainment experience with the company emphasising the social sharing capabilites of the new app as its centerpiece.

Although the cloud has long played a critical role in the Xbox 360 experience, the new SkyDrive app highlights the benefits of the cloud connectivity with users able to use the app to access photos and videos that users can share with friends instantly. Photos and video will appear almost instaneously after they have been shared, making for a close to real-time entertainment experience.

In addition, Microsoft will also be adding over 40 other apps to the Xbox 360 to users, with apps varying according to region. Highlights include apps for Maxim and Flixster coming to the US, while Canada gets CBC’s Hockey Night and Slacker Radio among others. The full list is available on the Major Nelson blog.
