AT&T launches tablet sale: $100 off iPads, Android models

updated 03:31 am EST, Sun December 16, 2012

Various full-size iPad models, range of Android options

In a surprise move perhaps inspired by iPad discounts at various other retailers, cellular provider AT&T has announced an online and in-store tablet sale, taking $100 off a selection of 7-inch and larger Android tablets as well as various iPad models, including the iPad mini. The deal is contingent on signing a two-year data plan, but does include a rare price break on the current-model LTE Retina iPad and LTE iPad mini at all size options.

The offer also includes refurbished iPads, though the only iPad offering currently available as refurbished is the 16 or 32GB Wi-Fi + Cellular model, the latter now priced at $429 with a two-year contract. Android models are also available, both new and refurbished, including the Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 and Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 models. Two Window 8 tablets, the Samsung ATIV Smart PC and the ASUS VivoTab RT, are on sale as well -- though both are more expensive than most of the Android or iOS models available.

The sale runs through the end of December. The offer is only good on new activations, though customers can already be owners of other AT&T phones or other tablets.

I have an iPad 1 and AT&T's service is terrible on my iPad. Web pages load very slowly, sometimes taking several minutes. Sometimes the service cuts out altogether and I have to disconnect and reconnect to get service back, even though I am still showing "4 bars". I would recommend to anyone thinking about this deal to do a little research first on AT&T's service.

I have an LG600G cell phone with AT&T which works fine, no problems. The service is only bad as concerns my iPad.

apostle: since both products are using the exact same service, this would suggest that the problem you're having is not with AT&T, but rather with your iPad. Does Wi-Fi work normally? If so, you may want to test your 3G antenna by taking the iPad somewhere outside your normal area and trying to connect elsewhere. If you're still having problems, I would take the iPad to the nearest Apple Store and let them test it. I know it's out of warranty (probably) but at least then you'd know for sure what the issue was.

Thank you for your suggestions. I've had this problem occur in other locations where I've used the iPad+3G. It may be as you suggested, a problem with the iPad. It may also be possible that I am in a bad location overall. N.E. PA.. I also came across an article, which offers a few other possibilities. WiFi works ok with the iPad. Thanks again for you suggestions!
