Windows 8 adds 14,557 apps in last 35 days
Microsoft's fledgling Windows 8 app app store continues to grow, adding 14,557 apps in the past 35 days according to tracking website MetroStore Scanner. That brings the Windows 8 app ecosystem to a total of 35,167 apps, of which 22,000 are available in the US market. Microsoft's app store lags far behind the totals of industry leaders Apple and Google, but the new figures may be encouraging for Microsoft as the software giant struggles to stake a claim in the new computing environment.
According to The Next Web, the Windows 8 store debuted with 10,000 apps on October 30, growing to 13,000 within a week. Windows 8 is currently adding about 415 apps per day, which puts the OS on track to hit the 50,000 app mark on February 1.
While Microsoft is no doubt encouraged to see its app market growing, the 50,000 by February figure is below expectations the company set earlier this year. In an interview in October, Microsoft's sales and marketing vice president said he expected Windows 8 to hit the 100,000 app mark by February, with the company having sold some 400 million Windows 8 devices by July.
