Leap: 'We're at 100 percent capacity in the factory right now'

Leap Motion, the company behind the Kinect-like motion control technology module that debuted last year, has announced a partnership with Taiwanese electronics manufacturer Asus that will see Leap modules bundled with select notebooks and desktops shipping later this year. The agreement will cover Asus' All-in-One PCs, as well as the manufacturer's high-end notebooks. Leap is still making separate motion control units for preorder, but mid-2013 will mark the first time the units are available for purchase with a computer.

Leap CEO Michael Buckwald told The Verge today that the company is "at 100 percent capacity in the factory right now," having secured $30 million in Series B funding to scale up production of Leap modules. The company has already shipped 12,000 units to developers, and Buckwald expects Leap to produce hundreds of thousands, even millions, of units for pre-order or for inclusion in PC packages from Asus and other as-yet-unannounced OEM partners.

Buckwald says that there are plans to integrate Leap's technology into other devices. Reportedly, current Leap modules are low-impact enough to run on a smartphone processor, and Buckwald says that "as of this moment, there are Leap models that can fit almost any consumer product." As to which devices the technology could show up in in the near future, Buckwald would comment no further.
