Samsung also grabbing more share

iOS and Android further consolidated their dominance of smartphone platforms in the US during a three-month period ending in November, according to new comScore data. Google's Android rose from 52.6 percent in August to 53.7 percent in November, while Apple's iOS advanced from 34.3 to 35 percent. Losing out in the battle were RIM -- slipping from 8.3 to 7.3 percent -- and Microsoft, which dropped 0.6 points to 3 percent. Symbian dwindled an extra 0.2 points to 0.5 percent.

Samsung remains the top individual phone maker, having grown 1.2 points to a 26.9 percent share. Apple, though, grew at a faster pace, moving up 1.4 points to 18.5 percent. LG slipped from 18.2 percent to 17.5, while Motorola went from 11.2 to 10.4, and HTC dipped 0.4 points to 5.9 percent.

Together, Apple and Google devices control over 88 percent of US smartphones. The situation has left relatively little breathing room for new platforms, such as Windows Phone, or long-standing ones like RIM's BlackBerry.

Consolidate? Consolidate means merge together for a single purpose. Did Apple and Goodle merge? I doubt it.

I think the author meant "solidify."
