Docking, convertible Lenovo notebooks impressive
Electronista is on the ground in Las Vegas for the 2013 Consumer Electronics Show, and we got to spend a little bit of time handling two new notebook offerings from Chinese computer giant Lenovo. We got our hands on Lenovo's IdeaTab Lynx, a Windows 8 tablet that docks into a keyboard, and the Lenovo Yoga 11S, which packs the same bendy form factor as Lenovo's other Yoga model but in an 11-inch frame. Read on for initial impressions and the takeaway.
The IdeaTab Lynx runs the full version of Windows 8 and can plug into a separately-sold keyboard dock for the hard core productivity minded. Inside, it's got an Intel Atom processor, and the Lenovo attendant told us it will likely give performance comparable to a Celeron, so if you're looking for a workhorse, this might not be the device for you. For a simple, lightweight, convertible solution, though, the IdeaTab Lynx seems like a good fit. The tablet segment undocks -- with a little bit of manipulation -- and it's quite light in the hand. Its HD screen seems more than sufficient for watching movies and playing games.
We weren't exactly in love with the IdeaTab Lynx's keyboard, as it seemed a bit unresponsive, and the device on the whole is not as well designed as, say, Asus' Transformer series. We did, though, love what the keyboard dock brings to the equation: eight hours of battery life. Couple that with the estimated eight hours of life built into the tablet and you've got 16 hours of operation for the unit as a whole.
The Yoga 11S, on the other hand, immediately caught our eye. It's lightweight, but sturdy, with an aluminum frame that feels like anything but. Our attendant said that the smaller Yoga has a "rubberized paint" finish, giving the unit a grippiness that's striking at first. It's a good feel, if still a little weird.
Inside, the Yoga 11S will have a Y-Series Intel Ivy Bridge processor, up to an i7. Lenovo estimates its battery is good for six to seven hours of use. The Yoga 11S will be shipping in May of this year, starting at $799 for the i3 processor model.
