Survey: One in two phone purchasers seek Apple's iPhone 5

Strong demand for 'phablet,' unexpected Samsung gains also found

Potentially casting some doubt on the recent reports of lowered iPhone demand, market research firm ChangeWave Research has found that 50 percent of people planning on buying a smartphone in the next three months say that they will buy an Apple iPhone, in line with expected trends in the months following a new release by the Cupertino manufacturer. At the same time, with no new immediate release, only 21 percent of those surveyed are planning on buying a Samsung smartphone.

"Consumer buying intent for Samsung smart phones has been extraordinary to start the year. Considering the Galaxy S III has been out for several months we'd normally expect a slowdown by now -- but it's still red hot," said Paul Carton of the ChangeWave service. "We're also seeing strong interest in Samsung's large-screen phone -- the Galaxy Note II." The analyst expects the "super-sized smartphone" concept to do well in 2013.

Samsung's unexpected gains bucking the expected trend has been attributed to strong demand for the heavily-advertised Galaxy S III phone, with 69 percent of Samsung purchasers planning on buying it. The "phablet" Samsung Galaxy Note II is desired by 23 percent of Samsung purchasers, with the remaining 8 percent occupied by the rest of the Korean manufacturer's expansive line of products.

The December survey polled 4,061 mostly North American respondents, and evaluated satisfaction, mobile operating system preference, and purchase plans. ChangeWave Research found that 71 percent of iOS users were very satisfied with their purchase, with 53 percent happy with Windows Phone. Android trailed with 48 percent satisfaction with the operating system, and RIM far behind at 26 percent.
