New 16, 18-megapixel cameras include 30x, 42x zoom

Nikon has extended its point-and-shoot Coolpix line with a pair of compact super-zoom cameras. The 16-megapixel Coolpix L820 is capable of recording Full HD video through its 30x zoom NIKKOR lens, while the more-powerful and higher-resolution 18-megapixel Coolpix P520 increases the zoom range of the lens to 42-times.

The P520 has a 3.2-inch, 921k-dot rear display, a built-in GPS for geotagging, automatic HDR and Macro modes, and options to simply create panoramas and 3D imagery. A ten-shot full-resolution burst mode is also accompanied by a 30-frame, 1 shot per second extended burst, while the movie mode can record footage at up to 120fps at a VGA resolution, and can also record 1080i footage at 60, 50, 30 and 25fps.

The L820 Has a smaller 3-inch rear display, a side lever to shift between landscape and super-telephoto distances, and is also capable of one-touch full HD recording. A built-in smart portrait system can take shots when the subject smiles, alerts when a subject blinks in a shot, and can also retouch subjects with "Glamor" options, as well as 19 more-standard scene modes.

The P520 will be on sale at the end of February for 400 ($630), while details of the L820 price and release schedule were not revealed.
