AT&T Lumia 900 most likely first update in US

After an oft-delayed start, the Windows Phone 7.8 update has begun its rollout to some phones currently on Windows Phone 7.5. Starting today and proceeding through February a message will appear on the screen of users' Nokia Lumia 510, 610, 710, 800, and 900 handsets encouraging the update. Rollout timing is operator dependent, with the AT&T Lumia 900 expected to lead the pack in the US. Unlocked phones may have the update available earlier.

The Windows Phone 7.8 update adds a refreshed start screen experience, with the ability to resize user interface tiles, new user customizations are available for the lock screen including improved pocket and child lock screen security. The update also adds additional language support, opening up the Windows Phone platform to additional countries.

Electronista spoke with an executive at AT&T who told us that the carrier would comply with the February rollout timeline that Nokia laid out on its blog post. No specific dates were given.
