Record sales revenues, PC shipments, global market share

Lenovo has reported record results in its third quarter filing, in what the company calls it's "best quarter ever." The Chinese computer manufacturer achieved a record sales revenue of $9.4 billion for the quarter, a 12-percent year-on-year increase, thanks mostly to its 14.1 million PC shipments, itself a record in its own right.

Pre-tax income is said to be $246 million for the quarter, with its third quarter earnings 34-percent higher than the same period last year, hitting $205 million, while gross margins were 11.8 percent. Gross profit for the quarter increased 15 percent year-on-year to $1.1 billion.

Global market share reached 15.9-percent, making this the 15th quarter in a row that Lenovo has grown faster than the PC industry as a whole. Lenovo's own PC shipments, growing 7.9 percent, is almost an exact opposite of the industry's 7.8-percent year-on-year reduction.

While most of the report is focused on the company's computer business, it was also revealed that it's growing Mobile Internet and Digital Home division makes up 11 percent of revenues. The section, dealing with smart TVs, smartphones, and tablets, improved its share in the Chinese smartphone market to 12.3 percent, and will reportedly start shipping to emerging markets in Russia, Indonesia, the Philippines, Vietnam, and India in the coming months. There are also reports that Lenovo is considering acquiring troubled phone producer Research in Motion.
