HP rumored working on new Android tablet, smartphone

HP is rumored to be developing an Android tablet, acccording to Readwrite. The device will be powered by an Nvidia Tegra 4 quad-core processor and has been in development since Thanksgiving. The same sources also indicate that HP is also working on Android smartphone as well, although it is uncertain if the device would be released this year.

If the rumor is accurate, it will be HP's second attempt at entering the 'post-PC' mobile device space following its failed $1.2 billion acquisition of Palm. Under former CEO Mark Hurd, HP had aimed to compete with Apple's iPhone and iPad by developing WebOS and WebOS-powered devices which included the Pre, Pixi and Veer smartphones as well as the TouchPad. However, Hurd's sacking following revelations of an inappropriate personal relationship saw the WebOS business scrapped under replacement CEO Leo Apotheker.

HP recently unveiled its first Google Chrome OS-powered Chromebook, the Pavilion 14, which adds some weight to the credibility of the rumor. HP may have previously experimented with Android-powered devices in house, with some recorded instances of its TouchPad shipping with Android inadvertantly pre-installed. Its adoption of Android would be a blow to Microsoft, but will undoubetedly help to further bolster the Android ecosystem.

If an HP Android tablet powered by a Tegra 4 SoC does emerge, it won't appear until at least August with news that Nvidia won't begin shipments to vendors until July. Similarly, if it also re-enters the smartphone space, it wouldn't be until late in Q2 at the earliest. Nvidia's own Tegra 4-powered Project Shield mobile gaming device won't make an appearance until late into the second quarter as well.
