RED sues Sony over video compression patent infringement

Injunction sought for banning, destruction of Sony cinema cameras
High-end camera manufacturer Red is suing Sony for patent violations. A pair of patents that relate to the compression of video in-camera in a “visually lossless manner” have been infringed on by three of Sony's cinema-quality cameras, devices that Red is seeking an injunction for to prevent sales and to have them destroyed.
The court filing picked up by Deadline sees Red claim that Sony's "unathorized, infringing cameras has resulted in lost sales, reduced the business and profit of Red, and greatly injured the general reputation of Red." Claiming it as a "willful and wanton" patent infringement, Red seeks not only the withdrawal from sale and destruction of the F65, F5, and F55 cameras, but also for Sony to account to Red off profits derived from the patent usage, and to pay either "an amount no less than lost profits or a reasonable royalty."
Sony has yet to comment on the lawsuit.
