Facebook updates SDK for iOS, revamps iOS Dev Center

updated 06:30 pm EST, Mon February 25, 2013

Improved web dialog support, error handling, API additions

Social media service Facebook on Monday introduced a revamped iOS Dev Center and a upgraded version of its Software Development Kit (SDK) for iOS app developers. The SDK, now at version 3.2, focuses on providing better mobile analytics -- including app usage metrics, ad optimization and purchase event logging. The update also brings in better error handling, improved web dialog support and the addition of a new FBAccessTokenData type to its API. The improvements, the company says, will make it easier to build, distribute and promote FB-enabled apps.

Facebook has enabled additional app usage metrics such as the iOS 6 native "share" sheet, and built-in native UI controls usage that can now be logged in the Facebook SDK. Displaying the metrics on App Insights is now enabled, allowing developers to have a clearer picture of how users interact with the apps. The company says it is also working on a version of its conversion measurement product (currently only for websites) that would apply to native iOS apps. The new SDK version takes the first step there by logging conversion events from developers' apps, so that advertisers can both measure and optimize their return on investment in Facebook ads by cataloging user actions after the ads are seen.

Also, the new SDK previews support for logging in-app purchases with selected partners, and adds support and documentation for all classes of error responses. It now automatically categorizes errors by common application handling behavior and provides helpers to fix common problems. The update expands the number of error cases to include new iOS 6 cases, such as password changes or expired tokens.

It also adds support for integrating two web dialogs, Feed Dialog and Requests Dialog, without invoking deprecated headers, making it easier to add dialogs into apps. The new FBAccessTokenData type should make it easier to open a session from token data explicitly, allowing better app and deep linking. Various other bug fixes to improve stability have also been incorporated.
