Google CFO says Google is yet to exhaust inherited product pipeline

Google CFO and Senior VP Patrick Pichette has admitted in an interview at the Morgan Stanley Technology Conference that Motorola's current smartphone lineup lacks the 'wow' factor. According to Pichette, the transition to the new generation of truly Google-inspired Motorola designs is still up to five months away. When Google finalized its purchase of Motorola last May, largely for its patent portfolio, it also inherited an 18-month product pipeline that it hasn't been able to influence much beyond the software.

"We've inherited 18 months of pipeline that we actually have to drain right now, while we're actually building the next wave of innovation and product lines," said Pichette. He added that Motorola's current product portfolio is "not really to the standards that what Google would say is wow -- innovative, transformative." "We have to go through this transition. These are not easy transitions."

Google's acquisition of Motorola created a degree of uncertainty among its Android partners, particularly Samsung, which is responsible for making the most popular Android-powered smartphones on the market. Playing this aspect of the deal down at the time, Google insisted that it would not favor Motorola in any way. Since the acquisition, it has yet to release a Motorola handset under its own Google Nexus branding, as it has with partners including HTC, Samsung and LG. With regard to its relationship with Samsung, Pichette said that Google and Samsung continue to enjoy a "terrific relationship."

The rumored Motorola X Phone, could be one of the first Google-inspired smartphones to hit the market. It is said to have 'game changing' features, and is set to pull together Google's services in a way that no other smartphone has yet been able to execute. [via The Verge]
