Week of discounts, free items for Android users

Google is celebrating the one year anniversary of rebranding the Android Market to Google Play, by offering discounts and free downloads to users of Android tablets and mobile devices. The celebratory offers come at the same time as Google makes available its Google Play gift cards in retail stores in the United Kingdom.

A number of books, TV shows and free music downloads are being offered by the app store, according to Android Central, with apps including Hotels.com and Gyft offering discounts and gift cards for in-app purchases. The US version of the store page tells that it is the start of a week of special deals, with similar offers being made available in the Google Play store in other regions.

The Google Play gift cards are available in the UK from today, roughly six months after appearing in US store shelves. In the same £10, £25, and £50 ($15, $37, and $75 respectively) denominations as the US counterpart, the cards will be initially available in Tesco and Morrison supermarkets in the coming weeks.
