Compares impact of Windows 8 to Windows Vista launch

A senior executive in Samsung has declared that Windows 8 has failed to "bolster demand for PCs." Jun Dong-soo, president of Samsung's memory chip division, told reporters that, while Windows 8 has made little headway, he also believes the personal computer industry will not be rebounding anytime soon.

In terms of impact on the PC industry, he claimed "the Windows 8 system is no better than the previous Windows Vista platform," according to the Korea Times. Due to Windows 8's apparent failure Jun claimed that the PC industry would gradually phase itself out in favor of mobile devices. "MS's rollout of its Windows Surface tablet is seeing lackluster demand," claimed Jun, continuing "previous vigorous pitches by Intel and MS for thinner ultrabooks simply failed and I believe that's mostly because of the less-competitive Windows platform. "

While the Windows 8 launch has been relatively uneventful so far, some parties still believe that there could be a change in PC sales figures on the horizon. IDC forecasted a 2.8-percent growth in PC sales for 2013, though its estimated 3-percent prediction for 2012 turned out to be a 4.5-percent contraction.

Keep in mind IDC doesn't have a clue. Jun is most likely right on.
