Report: Twitter buys We Are Hunted to launch music service

updated 04:28 pm EDT, Wed March 13, 2013

Purchased music discovery system partnered with Spotify at launch

Leveraging its rumored acquisition of music discovery service We Are Hunted in the last six months, Twitter is said to be launching a standalone music app, which could be released on iOS by the end of March. According to CNet sources familiar with the matter, the service generates a popularity-based chart, similar to Billboard, for online music that constantly monitors blogs, social media, BitTorrent, and other Internet sources for ranking.

We Are Hunted apps are still available, such as Music Hunter for the iPad and SuperSonic for the iPhone. The company initially partnered with Spotify, allowing for We Are Hunted charts to be listened to from the Spotify client software. The San Francisco company hasn't tweeted for over two weeks, the founders' biographies have been pulled from the company website, and at this time, the service is completely unavailable.

According to the report, We Are Hunted employees have been using the #NowPlaying hashtag on Twitter to test the app. CNet says of the app that "artists and songs are displayed in an elegant grid design. Tapping on the tile for an artist causes the tile to expand, showing a short biography along with links to any music the artist has stored on SoundCloud, or to song previews from the iTunes store. Users then tap a 'play' button to start streaming the music. So far, the app does not integrate with Spotify or other streaming services."
