New Galaxy S 4 leak shows SmartPause, touchless controls

updated 10:39 am EDT, Thu March 14, 2013

Floating touch controls used to navigate smartphone

Features of a phone said to be the Samsung Galaxy S 4 have been demonstrated in new videos, made by the same source as other recent leaks. The clips, uploaded to YouTube hours before Samsung takes to the stage in its New York-based launch event, seem to show off its floating touch controls and SmartPause, as well as a general look at its web browsing experience.

Floating Touch appears to allow the user to perform the usual touch-based commands about a third of an inch away from the screen, with screen touches appearing to be used for confirming selections. The lack of physical touching should in theory allow for the screen to stay cleaner without any smearing from normal touchscreen use.

SmartPause, seemingly an extension of the SmartStay feature from the Galaxy S III, will automatically pause a playing video when it detects the user is looking away from the screen, according to Sammy Hub. Returning to the screen doesn't appear to reactivate the video, requiring the viewer to manually play it.

The water-based unlock screen from the Galaxy S III looks to be replaced with a ball of light or lens flares, possibly continuing Samsung's previous "nature" theme. The last video, showing off the phone's browsing experience, demonstrates it as capable of quick page rendering and navigation, as well as showing a few touch-less browser actions. Swiping with the hand up or down will move the page vertically, while the screenshot command from the Galaxy S III also makes an appearance, though this time the side swipe with the hand edge seems to be easier to perform thanks to being contactless.

While the videos are highly likely to be of the Galaxy S 4 in action, it will not be confirmed until after Samsung reveal their new mobile device later today.
