Apple refreshes iPhone 5 marketing page following GS4 debut
Apple has updated its iPhone 5 webpage in the wake of the Samsung Galaxy S 4 launch this week. The new page includes a section on 'Why iPhone' as well as a new slogan 'Loving it is easy. That's why so many people do.' The new slogan replaces the previous slogan that read 'The biggest thing to happen to iPhone since iPhone,' which emphasised Apple's switch to a 4-inch display from 3.5-inches.
The new page outlines the reasons why people love their iPhones according to Apple, while highlighting the fact that Apple has won eight straight J.D. Power and Associates awards ranking "Highest in Customer Satisfaction with Consumer Smartphones." Apple goes on to explain that the award covers categories including performance, physical design, features and ease of operation.
Apple also goes on to tout the benefits of the iPhone's Retina 326ppi display, making the somewhat unusual and potentially misleading claim that such displays remain a "feature found only on iPhone and other Apple products." It may be the case that "Retina displays" are only found on the iPhone and Apple products, but there are numerous other smartphones with higher pixel densities than the iPhone and, indeed other Apple products. The Google Chromebook Pixel, for example, has a higher pixel density than Apple's Retina MacBook Pros, though the unit's display is not regarded as being quite the same quality. Apple also may not be referring only to pixel density alone, but rather the overall design of the Retina displays, which includes a number of patented elements not found on other screens.
The remaining claims are far less contentious, including the engineering involved in developing the iPhone 5 such as its "sleek aluminum enclosure," its Apple-designed A6 processor, battery life, wireless capabilities, camera and the entertainment options provided by the iTunes store, including serving over 800,000 apps ("all reviewed by Apple to guard against malware"). Here Apple continues to take pot shots at Android fragmentation, arguing "other mobile platforms have a myriad of fragmented store options, resulting in availability issues, developer frustration, and security risks."
Apple biggest single competitor in the smartphone market, Samsung, revealed the latest Galaxy smartphone on Thursday. The new Galaxy S 4 uses either a quad-core or eight-core (4+4) processor and centers on a large five-inch OLED 1080p display with a pixel density of 441ppi. However, unlike Apple, the Samsung Galaxy S 4 continues to be made from plastic, considered by some to be underwhelming for a high-end device.
Although Apple's iPhone has taken a strong lead over the Galaxy S III in recent quarters, it is thought that this has been due to a dip in demand from consumers holding off to see what Samsung did with its Galaxy S 4. Like Apple 'S' models, the Galaxy S 4 retains the design language of the previous generation model, but has incrementally improved its features. Adding spice to the battle between the two tech giants, both continue to be engaged in a fierce and ongoing legal battle around the globe.
