Device rumor follows recent price drops

Amazon has denied rumors that it is building a sub-$100 version of its 7-inch Kindle Fire HD. A report stated that the retailer would be putting the tablet, complete with a 1280x800 resolution and TI processor like the existing 7-inch Kindle Fire uses, into production and ready to ship later this year, something that Amazon claims is not happening.

The sources of TechCrunch led the publication to believe that such a device would be able to compete with low-cost and cheaply-made tablets from China, typically sold below the $100 barrier. The rumor also follows a recent announcement from Amazon that it would reduce the prices of its 8.9-inch Kindle Fire by between $30 and $100, at the same time as launching the larger tablet in six new markets.

A spokesperson for Amazon told The Verge that the story is false, and that the company is not planning a sub-$100 Kindle Fire HD, stating "It's not happening. We are already at the lowest price points possible for that hardware."
