Verizon adds cross-platform functionality to Messages app

updated 01:59 pm EDT, Fri March 22, 2013

Messages system works on multiple devices, tied to Verizon number

Verizon Wireless has updated its messaging application to include integrated messaging over multiple devices. The Verizon Messages service is now cross-platform, with messages able to be sent and received through one phone number via an Internet-connected device, or through a computer using the online account manager.

The app, for Android phones, Android tablets, and the iPad range, will synchronize with Verizon's cloud service, which will also store messages for a 90-day period unless deleted or stored on an SD card. A personalized automatic reply can be set up in the app, as well as options to alter the background of messages.

The addition of cross-platform unified messaging to the app could possibly help the carrier prevent customers from moving to other networks, though it will have to compete with other established systems, such as iMessage, Blackberry Messenger, and Skype.

    Apple iPhone Disruption

The great irony is the utter lack of real awareness by media and tech pundits on the enormous disruption that Apple [and really ONLY Apple] has had on the Telcos. Whether its customer interface, updates, apps explosion, tethering, voice to data, voicemail, media, iMessaage, FaceTime, etc. Major customer interfaces, OEM relationships, speed on innovation, revenue streams [remember TXT racket] etc. have and continue to be transformed, innovated, and evolved. Android OEMs and Googles great lost opportunity was to continue Apple's disruption of Telco business. Effectively without Apple or a diminished Apple in market the TELCOs would send us back to 2005 in a flash.
