Report: T-Mobile to finally announce iPhone on Tuesday

updated 09:15 pm EDT, Mon March 25, 2013

'Uncarrier' event focused on iPhone, new plans already live

After a prolonged wait following a deal struck back in December, T-Mobile will announce its plans for the iPhone and possibly the iPad as well at its "Uncarrier" event tomorrow, according to reports. The event will split its time between the iPhone announcement and the formal introduction of its already-in-effect "Uncarrier" plans, which eliminate phone subsidies and instead offer lower monthly fees but with an up-front "down payment" and a monthly charge to cover the cost of the device.

The report, if true, would finally give a timetable for T-Mobile customers to buy an iPhone and use it on the US' forth-largest network. The company has spent much of the intervening months between the first announcement of the deal and now building up its LTE capabilities in major markets, and should formally announce the launch of the new, faster LTE service. About 2.5 million iPhone users are already on T-Mobile's network, using unlocked iPhones. T-Mobile has been aggressively marketing to unlocked iPhone users for over a year in anticipation of eventually obtaining the top-selling device.

The company has gained a following from its simple plan pricing and being one of the few outlets still offering a flat-rate "unlimited" data plan, along with no-charge "tethering" of paid data to other devices at any tier. It's also possible that T-Mobile may use the event to welcome the BlackBerry Z10 to its lineup as well, and has already issued an update to Samsung Galaxy Note II owners to enable compatibility. The carrier is likely to announce LTE "4G" coverage in a number of major cities as well, including New York, New Orleans, Kansas City, Denver, Las Vegas, the San Jose and Bay Area in California and Seattle, along with potentially some other cities.
