Samsung sues LG for 'tarnishing' brand in advertisements

Refrigerator capacity fight reaches Seoul District Court

Samsung is suing LG over allegations it is tainting the value of Samsung's brand. The lawsuit, filed in the Seoul District Court in South Korea, sees Samsung demanding 50 billion won ($45 million) in compensation for "tarnishing its corporate image", and is the latest move in the ongoing feud between the two electronics manufacturers over its refrigerators.

The filing concerns the two companies publicly arguing over the capacity of their kitchen appliances, according to the Korea Herald. Samsung initially posted a video on YouTube last August that compared its own refrigerator capacity in comparison to LG's own offerings, which the latter claimed had the larger capacity. LG countered the Samsung video by demanding 10 billion won ($9 million) in compensation, and ran more advertisements against Samsung.

In recent months, Samsung has dropped a lawsuit against LG over alleged leakage of OLED and LCD technology secrets, while LG has accused the Galaxy S4 of infringing on its own eye-tracking patents. LG also attempted to ambush the Galaxy S4's launch by planting similar-looking advertisements for the Optimus G near Samsung's own.
