MakerBot and Ouya team on novel 3D printed custom console case

To celebrate the impending launch of the crowd-funded Ouya Android gaming console, MakerBot and Ouya have partnered to deliver 3D printed custom cases for the device. Ouya provided MakerBot, the makers of the Replicator 2 Desktop 3D printer, with the design files for the console case and offered the .stl file for download. Users will need access to a MakerBot Replicator 2 printer in order to print the case and reassemble the componentry.

The Replicator 2 3D printer retails for $2,199, while the filament required to create 3D printed creations costs $48 per kilogram, making the proposition for creating one's own case an expensive one. However, when the console ships, its open-architecture is designed to make easy for users to hack their console's hardware as well as operating system. MakerBot also says that users can further modify the case beyond the original design, creating a truly one-off custom design.

The Ouya console will have an official launch event this week. It is powered by an Nvidia Tegra 3 processor, while Nvidia also provided the Ouya team with specialist support to help get the most of the hardware. With over 7,000 registered developers and support from the vendors of top selling iOS and Android game titles on board, the console looks like it may disrupt the traditional game console paradigm. The Ouya console can be preordered for $99, with early backers expected to receive their consoles over the next week. [via Android Police]
