Facebook teases 'new home on Android' in event invitation

updated 10:11 am EDT, Fri March 29, 2013

Event could reveal long-rumored Facebook phone

Facebook is going to roll out something connected to Android, according to an invitation to a media event being held next week. Though not giving much of a clue as to what will be revealed, the message asks members of the press to "Come see our new home on Android," inviting speculation that this could be connected to the long-rumored Facebook phone.

It is thought by TechCrunch that the event will reveal a HTC handset running a modified version of Android. The forked operating system would have native Facebook functionality on the homescreen, and though not a complete conversion of Android, it would have a heavy reliance on Facebook native apps, such as Messenger.

Previously leaked information suggested that a HTC device being worked on with Facebook will have a 1.5GHz dual-core Snapdragon S4 processor, 1GB of RAM, and a near-Retina 4.3-inch display. It will also have 16GB of internal storage, a 5-megapixel rear camera with 1.6-megapixel front-facing counterpart, and will support LTE connectivity.

Earlier this month, Facebook expanded its Voice over IP (VoIP) offering to users in the United Kingdom, after a successful launch in the United States and Canada. The service, appearing through the Facebook Messenger app on both Android and iOS, provides free calls between Facebook users, and seems to be a natural application to use on a Facebook-focused device.
