Authorities accept building design from Frank Gehry
Facebook has received permission to build a second campus designed by Frank Gehry near its existing location. Authorities of Menlo Park have permitted the new build, a 22-acre site west of Bayfront Expressway in California, and will include a rooftop park and an underground tunnel to connect the two campuses as part of the design.
Originally, the 433,555-square-foot location was to have parts of the building "flaring out like butterfly wings," but were dropped for being "too flashy," said Gehry's creative partner Craig Webb to the Mercury News. The new campus will have an average height of 45 feet, reaching 73 feet at some parts, but will be mostly hidden by landscaping in order to keep with Facebook management's request for a low-key building.
Gehry has previously worked on such buildings as the Guggenheim Museum in Bilboa, Spain, and the LA Walt Disney Concert Hall.
