April Fools Day joke flushes out possible future Baidu product

Baidu is looking at possibly creating its own version of Google Glass. Following an April Fools' Day joke that apparently showed the company producing a head-mounted display with a number of similar features to Google's product, the Chinese search company has confirmed it is working on its own smart glasses, but only as a small-scale internal test for feasibility.

Kaiser Kuo of Baidu told TechCrunch "There is an internal project we are working on, a small internal test, but we're not even certain it will ever be brought to market." Though he has not "been invited to play with it," Kuo suggests "We may go with it, but we may not, but it certainly fits with what we have been doing."

Originally reported by Sina Tech, the Baidu Eye shares a number of traits with its Google-based counterpart. A small LCD display sits inside the user's peripheral vision, while voice control, image recognition, bone conduction technology and others are also touted to be used in the device. Battery life is suggested to be around 12 hours for the unit, but it isn't clear if that figure represents the prototype or a theoretical finished product.

If Baidu does come to market with a head-mounted display, it will have more than Google to compete against. The Brother AiRScouter, Canon MR system, Vuzix 1200AR and others all tout glasses with a display, though with varying levels of practicality.
