New sensor brings higher sensitivity

Canon has introduced a new flagship G-series camcorder, the Vixia HF G30, geared for advanced amateur videographers. The camera features a new wide-angle f/1.8 lens with 20X zoom capabilities, built with the same ultra-low dispersion glass that is used in the company's pro equipment, while the new CMOS sensor has been enlarged over its predecessor for improved light sensitivity and reduced noise.

Taking inspiration from Canon's EF-series lenses, an eight-blade circular aperture is claimed to create a smoother out-of-focus area compared to the previous G-series camcorders. Users can also take advantage of a manual focus ring, switchable to control zoom.

Other improvements include 1080/60p MP4 recording capabilities alongside the existing AVCHD Progressive option, along with a 2.5-inch OLED touchscreen and a Wi-Fi radio. Recording options provide control over color temperature, shutter speed and storage to dual SD cards.

Canon has also added Wi-Fi capabilities, enabling users to remotely control the camera and change settings via a web browser from a computer, smartphone or tablet. The system provides further options for uploading and sharing to iOS devices via free App Store titles.

The Vixia HF G30 is expected to ship in June for $1700.
